  WERF PREPARATION

Preparing for WERF

Between now and WERF:

1. Read through the WERF information on the web site and compile a folder of items you will need to bring to WERF.

2. Practice interviewing and talking about teaching. Make sure that you can answer the following questions in a professional way that communicates who you are as an educator and as a person. It may be helpful to write out brief answers to these questions so that you have an abbreviated "script" to practice with.

Describe your teaching style.
What is your philosophy of teaching/education?
What can you contribute to the school system?
Why would you be a successful teacher?
What have you learned from your teaching experiences (practicums, etc.)?
What courses/subjects are you competent/qualified to teach?
What do you want to be doing 5 or 10 years from now?
What are your strengths and weaknesses?
Why do you want to teach?

(See the EPCS K-12 Jobs Search Interviewing section for more interviewing tips)

3. Fine tune your resume and portfolio (UW-Madison Candidates: see an EPCS consultant for help with this by calling 608/262-1755 to set up an appointment).

4. Make copies of completed applications for reference in case you need to fill out applications for the interviewing school districts.

5. Prepare a TENTATIVE personal interview and a form thank-you note that you can draw on during WERF.

6. Think about which geographical locations you are most interested in and research the school districts in those areas.

Materials To Bring To WERF:

1. Certificate of Registration and $5 entrance fee, or $20 cash if you are registering at the door.

2. Many copies of your resume.

3. Information to use to complete application forms such as copies of completed applications and written answers to the teaching questions listed above.

4. Two or more pens with either black or dark-blue ink to use on applications and for note-taking.

5. Copies of other material that demonstrate your work as a professional educator like a teaching portfolio. (UW-Madison candidates: You may want to print selections from your portfolio/or list access info or EPCS password on your resume.
Contact EPCS with questions on how to present your portfolio.)
